Fotis Sotiropoulos
Professor of Civil Engineering
Director of SAFL
James L. Record Professor of Civil Engineering

Fotis Sotiropoulos’ research is aimed at developing high-resolution, fluid-structure interaction, computational algorithms for enabling virtual experiments and simulation-based engineering design in real-life environmental, renewable energy, and biological applications. His group’s ongoing work focuses on wind turbines and farms; marine hydrokinetic turbines and farms; simulation of turbulence in natural aquatic environments, including coupled interactions of flow with biota; sediment transport and scour at bridge foundations and stream/river restoration structures; hydrodynamics of aquatic propulsion; buoyancy dominated flows; vortex induced vibrations; medical devices and virtual surgery; and transport and mixing of particles in chaotically advected flows.
