Field studies and physical and computational modeling of turbulence across a range of scales drive energy research at SAFL. Advanced techniques such as computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling and sophisticated data collection from scaled physical models and unique field-scale facilities allow us to develop science-based approaches for optimizing the performance of devices and facilities that harness energy from water, air, and biological sources.
Focus Areas
- Wind Power – Turbine and blade design, wind farm siting
- Water power – Including hydropower and marine and hydrokinetic power
- Biofuels – Algal biofuel production
- Hydrocarbons – Basin and delta reservoir architecture
