Lights! Camera! Impact!
Members of a British film crew recently filmed a series of experiments at SAFL for an upcoming documentary on meteorite impacts. Junior Scientist Craig Hill (above right), Post Doc Doug Jerolmack, and NCED Director Chris Paola (neither shown), were essential in recreating the experiments the filmakers were seeking to include. The crew is looking at recent evidence that the mass extinction event of 250 million years ago (The End Permian) was caused by just such an impact that triggered a series of other disastrous environmental effects. Who We Are

SAFL is the world's only fluid-mechanics laboratory that uses a natural waterfall as its prime water source. For nearly 70 years researchers from around the world have been visiting our unique location on an island in the Mississippi River to conduct research for developing innovative and sustainable engineering solutions to major environmental, water-resources, and energy-related problems. We would like to extend our warmest invitation to visit our facilities and talk with our research staff and students.

SAFL is also proud to be the headquarters for the National Center for Earth-surface Dynamics (NCED), an NSF Science and Technology Center.

Announcements

SAFL Alumni

SAFL is currently accepting applications for its summer program Mechanics of Complex Materials, an NSF/DoD sponsored Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Program.

Omid Mohseni describes SAFL's role in the growing world of stormwater management BMPs in the current issue of Stormwater: The Journal of Surface Water Quality Professionals. Omid Mohseni and John Gulliver are currently working on three projects addressing stormwater BMPs funded by LRRB, Met Council, and MPCA.

Welcome Aboard! The lab continues to grow with many new Visiting Researchers, Students and Staff (including new UROP recipients).

Congrats SAFL grads!
