Automated Water Surface Profilers

Water surface measurement instrumentation and software developed and used at SAFL.

To measure water surface elevations, ultrasonic probes are often used. These probes return a distance to the water surface accurate to 0.5 mm which is converted to local water surface elevation at a rate up to 100 measurements per second. Distributed water surface measurements are used to compute discharge and to characterize steady and unsteady water surface profiles.

Institutions utilizing this SAFL system: UC Berkeley/Stillwater Sciences, UIUC Hydrosystems Laboratory, UT Austin
