View of the SAFL building from the river

This flume was designed and fabricated through the NSF ARI-R2 renovation project and is a one-of-a-kind facility for examining interactions between moving fluid and the physiology of living organisms. The flume features a racetrack planform design with recirculating flow that is powered by a spinning paddle.

Features

  • 10 m long x 0.6 m wide x 0.2 m deep (32.8 ft x 2 ft x 0.7 ft)
  • Clear acryllic walls to allow sunlight to promote growth of photosynthetic organisms
  • Variable flow speed
  • Temperature regulated through heat exchange fins within the flume
  • One section has option for moving bed configuration
