There are currently three position openings at the St. Anthony Falls Laboratory:
Research Associate in Experimental Fluid Mechanics
Research Associate in Computational Fluid Mechanics
Ecogeomorphology and Stream Restoration Research Associate
Position Opening: Research Associate in Experimental Fluid Mechanics
The St. Anthony Falls Laboratory (SAFL) has an open Research Associate position for an energetic scientist to work in the area of experimental fluid mechanics.
The laboratory has an active program in several aspects of fluid mechanics including wind energy and cavitation and bubbly flows. We are seeking an individual with a strong grounding in the fundamentals of fluid mechanics that can contribute to a variety of research programs with particular emphasis on wind energy and cavitation. The laboratory is well equipped with a state of the art wind tunnel, especially fitted for atmospheric turbulence and wind energy research, a high speed water tunnel and a variety of specialized flumes including a f lume for large-scale testing with glass wall observation section, wave generator, towing carriage with 6 m/s maximum velocity, measurement carriage, and a sediment recirculating system. The laboratory is also the home of a University of Minnesota led consortium on wind energy recently announced by the US Department of Energy. Consortium research will be centered around a 2.3MW wind energy, field-scale research facility, which will be operational within 2010.
The successful applicant must have an earned doctorate in aerospace engineering, civil engineering, physics, mechanical engineering, or an affiliated field with a background in experimental fluid mechanics with expertise in various optical measurement techniques such as particle image velocimetry (PIV), and laser-Doppler velocimetry (LDV). The successful candidate is expected to collaborate with other faculty members of the laboratory to establish a research program in experimental fluid mechanics and be able to interface with an active program of numerical modeling. This appointment is for a period up to two years with the opportunity to continue beyond this time in a variety of other experimental research.
Interested applicants are encouraged to apply online at https://employment.umn.edu/applicants/Central?quickFind=84302 . Screening of applications begins November 15, 2009 and continues until the position is filled. The University of Minnesota is an equal opportunity/affirmative-action employer.
Position Opening: Research Associate in Computational Fluid Mechanics
The St. Anthony Falls Laboratory has an open Research Associate position for an energetic scientist to work in the area of computational fluid mechanics for wind and hydrokinetic energy applications.
The laboratory is the home of a University of Minnesota led consortium on wind energy recently announced by the US Department of Energy. Consortium research will be centered around a 2.3MW wind energy, field-scale research facility, which will be operational within 2010. The field-scale work will be supplemented by laboratory experiments in SAFL's state-of-the-art wind tunnel, especially fitted for atmospheric turbulence and wind energy research. Computational projects of interest include: aeroelasticity and flow-induced vibrations of wind turbine blades; wake turbulence effects and turbine-to-turbine interactions; and multi-scale modeling of wind farms.
The successful applicant must have an earned doctorate in aerospace engineering, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, or an affiliated field with strong background in one or more of the following areas: computational aerodynamics; fluid structure interaction and aeroelasticity; URANS, LES, and hybrid modeling of complex turbulent flows; atmospheric boundary layers. Extensive experience with large-scale parallel computing is essential. The successful candidate is expected to collaborate with other faculty members of the laboratory to establish a research program in computational fluid mechanics and be able to interface with the field and laboratory-scale experimental work. This appointment is for a period up to two years with the opportunity to continue beyond this time in a variety of other experimental research.
