Nomination Guidelines and Rules

The award is available annually, on nomination by a faculty member, to a student at the University of Minnesota pursuing graduate studies in the water resources area. (Special consideration is given to students involved in the sediment transportation field, which was Dr. Anderson's specialty.)

Faculty of St. Anthony Falls Laboratory submit letters of nomination to the SAFL administrator in response to an annual call for nominations in November.

History of the Award

Dr. Alvin G. Anderson came to SAFL in 1945 and earned his PhD in 1950.  He spent the remainder of his career at SAFL, and was a valued adviser to many graduate students.  His principal research areas included sediment transport and hydraulic structures.  After becoming director of SAFL on July 1, 1974, he died suddenly exactly one year later.  This award was established in his honor by his family and friends after his death in 1975.
