The St. Anthony Falls Laboratory is an interdisciplinary fluid mechanics research and educational facility of the Institute of Technology at the University of Minnesota. Administratively the laboratory is under the auspices of the department of Civil Engineering and it is also affiliated with the departments of Geology and Geophysics and Ecology, Evolution and Behavior (College of Biological Sciences). Since 2002 the Laboratory has been the home of the NSF sponsored Science and Technology Center National Center for Earth-surface Dynamics (NCED), which is headquartered and administered at the Laboratory.
We conduct interdisciplinary fluid mechanics research aimed at developing science-based, sustainable, and practical solutions to major societal problems related to the environment, renewable energy, and health. Our research approach integrates cutting edge experimental work at laboratory and field scales with advanced computational tools and theory. Our highly qualified personnel, state-of-the-art research techniques, and unique experimental facilities allow us to effectively solve a wide range of complex engineering problems and serve the needs of local, state, and federal agencies, private consulting firms, engineering corporations and technical associations.
SAFL has educated hundreds of Ph.D. and Masters students who hold engineering and academic positions in all corners of the world. The Laboratory's research and its graduate program are linked in that our research provides educational and financial support to our graduate students. The Laboratory's graduate degree program follows the University of Minnesota 's academic requirements for graduate education, as dictated by the Director of the University of Minnesota Graduate School.
So whether you are a prospective graduate student, a researcher seeking to visit our laboratory and utilize our facilities, or a consulting engineer looking for cutting-edge solutions to your problem, we welcome you to our website and invite you to learn more about our basic and applied research activities. We welcome your comments and inquiries.
